Irene Cetin is Full Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Milan and Head of Obstetrics at the Mangiagalli Policlinico Hospital of Milan, one of the most renown maternity units in Italy. Within the University she coordinates the ‘Laboratory of Maternal-Fetal Translational Research Giorgio Pardi'.
She is listed among the “Top Italian Women Scientists” and her h-index is currently 82 with more than 25000 citations.
Prof Cetin has coordinated several research projects funded by national as well as European granting bodies. Her research group is composed of physicians and biologists working on the study of human pregnancy and placental function. Particularly, she has been working on understanding mechanisms regulating fetal oxygenation and growth. She has an internationally recognized expertise in maternal and fetal nutrition. In particular she has coordinated projects involved in defining micronutrients requirements during preconception, pregnancy and lactation. She has been studying pregnancy pathologies such as FGR, preeclampsia, preterm delivery and gestational diabetes, as well as autoimmune diseases in pregnancy. More recently her work has evolved towards prevention of maternal and fetal neonatal diseases with maternal immunization.
She is currently working with the Italian Institute of Health for monitoring and preventing maternal mortality, with a focus on direct causes such as PPH and sepsis. Since 2023 she is chairing the regional working body for obstetrics practice guidelines.
