MD, Associate professor, Adjunct senior lecturer
Karolinska Institutet, Sweden
My name is Sophia Brismar Wendel, MD, PhD, senior consultant and lead obstetrician at Danderyd Hospital and associate professor and adjunct senior lecturer at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. Danderyd Hospital has approximately 6000 annual births and is the third largest labor and delivery ward in Sweden. Karolinska Institutet is the greatest medical university of Sweden and one of the foremost medical research institutes globally. Perhaps it is best known for housing the Nobel Assembly which awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine each year. My research focuses on obstetric intrapartum interventions and prevention of obstetric complications, with special interest in pelvic floor injury at childbirth, postpartum hemorrhage, breech birth, and induction of labor. I am the lead investigator of the aortic compression trial presented here at the SMFM congress and also the lead investigator of the recently published multicenter EVA trial, Episiotomy in Vacuum-Assisted delivery. I am secretary of the Swedish network for national clinical studies in obstetrics and gynecology and we are working on establishing a nordic network for clinical trials as well. I am also into policy making as board member of the EAPM guideline committee, the Swedish national program group for gynecological diseases, pregnancy and childbirth, a national educational website on pelvic floor injury, and the Stockholm region obstetric guideline committee. As a bonus fact, I have been appointed the attending physician at the birth of five children of the Swedish Royal Family, which definitely put a cherry on top of my job.
