Associate senior consultant/PhD-student
Karolinska University hospital/ Karolinska Institute, Sweden
My name is Golbarg Vesterlund, Im a medical doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. I am an assistant senior consultant with focus on the delivery ward and erytrocyte alloimmunisation in pregnant women at Karolinska University Hospital. As a PhD student at Karolinska Institute, Im under the mentorship of Professor Juha Kere. Together we are conducting research on preeclampsia, specifically working towards identifying an early non-invasive biomarker. Our research hypothesis is that women with preeclampsia have a genetically inherited ability to easily activate their immune system when faced with semi-foreign cells such as the placenta/featus. Hence, we can identify placental cell damage and overactivated immune response in the mother's blood, long before the onset of clinical symptoms.
