Ciaran S Phibbs, PhD is a Professor of Pediatrics (Neonatology) and Health Policy at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is also a Senior Health Economist at the Health Economics Resource Center at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of California, San Diego, followed by a fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Phibbs’ research spans several foci, including:
• The costs and outcomes for perinatal care, and how the organization of perinatal care affects outcomes. Within this general area a major focus is on how regionalization of care/concentration of services affects outcomes and the trend towards deregionalization of perinatal care in the US.
• How nurse staffing affects patient outcomes:
• A general focus on provider competition affects the organization of care, costs, and outcomes. This includes a specific focus on how to define markets and competitors for healthcare providers, especially hospitals and hospital services.
